After ten years in prison the man was finally released. He had been accused of allegedly taking the life of an innocent person. But the prisoner insisted that he hadn’t done it. He said he was innocent, but no one cared about his words. All the evidence was against him. His fingerprints were found at the crime scene.
After prison the man didn’t go to his hometown, because all his relatives had long turned away from him. Instead, he bought a small house by the river, got some chickens, planted potatoes, and lived quietly. The people in the village didn’t talk to him and were even afraid of the former prisoner. Some simply didn’t greet him, others crossed to the other side of the street when they saw him. People were sure he was dangerous and capable of committing a crime.
One day he was working in the garden when he suddenly heard a sharp, piercing scream:
— Help!
The man rushed to the river. A young girl was drowning there, clawing at the water with her hands. The former prisoner, without thinking for even a second, jumped into the river, pulled the drowning girl out, laid her on the grass, and performed CPR. The girl coughed and finally opened her eyes.
The man carried her to his home, removed her wet clothes, covered her with a blanket, and gave her hot soup. By evening the girl finally calmed down and fell asleep.
But at night the neighbors heard strange noises and screams coming from the former criminal’s house. A woman was shrieking, someone was calling for help.
The neighbors got up, took flashlights, ropes, shovels — and headed toward his house. They were sure the man had found another victim.
— See, we were right to fear him, — one of the men said.

On the floor lay that same girl, with a red puddle around her. The man stood next to her with a rag in his hands. He was pressing her side, trying to stop the bleeding. Someone already shouted:
— Killed her!
— We knew it! A killer stays a killer!
The man was knocked to the floor, tied up, and someone was already calling the police. But when one of the men looked closely at the girl, he noticed that she was quietly moaning and breathing.
As it soon turned out, when she fell into the river, the girl had received a serious injury. The wound had opened again during the night because of a sudden movement in her sleep.
The former prisoner was screaming for the neighbors to call an ambulance, but no one listened to him. Everyone blamed him only because of his past, and no one even thought that he just wanted to help.
And in the morning everyone stood near his house and didn’t know what to say.
