That evening a cold autumn rain was falling. The man was returning home when he heard a plaintive whimper by the roadside. Under a streetlamp, in the wet grass, lay a German shepherd — thin, wounded, with dirty fur stuck to her body.
He sat down next to her and carefully reached out his hand. The dog trembled but didn’t snap, only whimpered softly, as if begging for help.
— Hold on, girl, — he whispered. — I’ll take you to the doctor now.
At the veterinary clinic, while the doctors examined the animal, one of them frowned:
— She’s not only injured… she’s pregnant.

— She’s far along. If she doesn’t give birth today — she may die.
He stayed waiting until morning. Behind the glass of the birthing room, the vets were rushing around, and he sat on a plastic chair listening to the rain starting again outside.

The man looked up.
— A wolf?..
— Yes. Judging by the marks on the mother’s body, she may have lived in the forest. It happens — a wild wolf mates with a dog, and hybrids are born.
The dog tiredly lifted her head and licked one of the babies.
— They are still her children, — the man said quietly.
A week later he took the shepherd home with him. The puppies remained at the center — under the supervision of scientists. One of the vets said:
— These babies are a rarity. Smart, strong and loyal. But they must be raised carefully: there is a part of the wild living in them.
